NuScale Power Installs Small Modular Reactor Simulation Lab at Texas A&M
NuScale Power has installed a small modular reactor (SMR) simulation laboratory
at Texas A&M University’s Center for Advanced Small Modular and Micro Reactors (CASMR),
making it the third such facility in the United States.
The simulator provides hands-on experience in operating a 12-unit NuScale SMR power plant,
allowing users to study the plant’s responses to various inputs.
The lab will facilitate research in human-system interface design, cyber security, diagnostics,
and automation, while also serving as an educational and outreach tool for students
and professionals in nuclear energy.
Supporting SMR Advancement and Workforce Development
The project was funded through a $286,000 grant from the
U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP),
supporting workforce development and SMR technology advancement.
The DOE has invested over $400 million since 2014 in SMR development,
underscoring the importance of this technology in the future of clean energy.
NuScale’s SMR design is the first and only SMR to undergo certification by
the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), with its first commercial plant expected
to begin operations by 2030 at Idaho National Laboratory.
