Light Water Reactors (LWR)

The Thermal-Hydraulic Research Laboratory hosts numerous experimental facilities used to investigate phenomena of importance for the current nuclear reactor fleet (Pressurized Water Reactors and Boiling Water Reactors), and for future LWR designs, such as Small Modular Reactors.

We have conducted basic and applied research through phenomenological, separate effects, and integral test facilities.

With the years, we have also developed outstanding computational capabilities, and performed system level calculations using RELAP5 (including RELAP5-3D), MELCOR, GOTHIC, TRACE, RETRAN, and MAAP, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations using commercial codes (StarCCM+, CFX, Fluent), and open sources codes, and advanced LES-based codes (Nek-5000).
